Squad Up 2020

PLAY GAMES. DEFEAT DUCHENNE!

For many in the Duchenne community, video games are not only a source of entertainment but a way to transcend physical limitations and build a wide network of friends from around the world. Squad Up is a charity gaming event that allows you to fundraise by playing your favourite games, whether online or IRL (“in real life”). It’s simple – play any game, anyway, any day, and help raise funds for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

It doesn’t matter what kind of gamer you are – tabletop, board game, sport, or video, Squad Up is for everyone. Play with family around the table, live stream your games online or dust off your old game console, the most important part is to have fun, and help us #DefeatDuchenne.

Thank you to the 56 players who helped raise $23,390 for Duchenne muscular dystrophy research, care, and advocacy!

There’s still time to donate toward Squad Up and receive a 2020 tax receipt. Click the button below to donate toward the event, an individual gamer, or squad!

COMMUNITY DAY – SEPTEMBER 26

Thank you to the avid online gamers and gaming communities who participated in the first-ever Community Day on Saturday, September 26, 2020. This all-day fundraising streaming event saw more than 20 gamers come together on Twitch to broadcast their participation to the Duchenne community across Canada.

We want to say a special thank you to:

  • Our ambassadors, Sam, Tory, Eric, and Clayton, for inspiring others by sharing what it’s like living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
  • Gary from FortNerdDotCom for enlisting superstar players for TWO Dungeons and Dragon games during the live-streamed Community Day, organizing a very successful online auction, promoting amazing content on social media, and providing advice and guidance as we continue to grow this event.
  • Mike from Big Blue Bubble for showcasing the new game, Foregone, through Squad Up.

Meet Our Ambassadors

Hi, my name is Clayton Theriault. I’m 27 years old, living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

What is Duchenne?

Duchenne is a progressive neuromuscular disorder that causes degeneration of the muscles, due to the absence of a protein called dystrophin. 1 in 5,000 boys are diagnosed with Duchenne in Canada.

Living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy has its challenges, but over the years I have learned to overcome them and stay as positive as I can.

I am very excited to be an ambassador for Squad Up 2020. Gaming is one of my favourite hobbies. It allows me to do things I am not able to do in the real world. I love the community aspect of gaming. I have met so many wonderful people over the years. The COVID-19 pandemic has given me so much appreciation for gaming. I play all sorts of games from sports to strategy.

Please join us on raising awareness for those living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy by registering for Squad Up!

Eric - Oakville, ON

Hi, my name is Samuel Lachain. I’m 26 years old, living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

All my life, the disease never discouraged me and I tried to do everything I could to achieve my dream. I possess a Bachelor in Journalism, I worked at Réseau des sports in the past and I now own a sports website.

My message is that if you never try something, you will never know if you can achieve it. Believe in who you are. Video games are a great way to bond with others and Squad Up is a great way to let people know my philosophy.

ABOUT JESSE’S JOURNEY

Jesse’s Journey is Canada’s leading charity in the fight to defeat Duchenne muscular dystrophy – the most common fatal genetic disease diagnosed in childhood. Affecting approximately 1 in every 5,000 boys in Canada, Duchenne gradually weakens the body’s muscles and ultimately leads to the deterioration of vital organs, such as the heart and lungs. Jesse’s Journey supports patients, families, and caregivers living with Duchenne through educational programs and resources, provides a collective voice to advocate for timely access to affordable treatments in Canada, and funds the most promising research to improve the lives of boys and young men.

IMPACT OF YOUR GIFT

Thanks to the generous donations by Squad Up gamers and supporters, Jesse’s Journey has been able to invest more than $13.1 million into research. As a result of our grants to research over 25 years, there have been significant advancements in clinical discoveries, significant improvements in the quality of life for those living with Duchenne, and children with Duchenne are living longer lives.
