Walk to Defeat Duchenne

The Walk to Defeat Duchenne is the largest annual fundraiser for Jesse’s Journey and unites families from coast to coast to raise awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

This year, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Jesse’s Journey, honouring the 1995 walk of John Davidson as he pushed his son, Jesse, across Ontario. Originally scheduled for May 25, 2020, we quickly reimagined the in-person event and YOU helped us achieve the largest, most successful Walk in our 25-year history – 100% online!

To keep everyone safe, we encouraged participants to refocus their efforts by choosing a location and distance of their choice from anywhere across Canada, moved the date to Monday, September 7, 2020 – World Duchenne Awareness Day, and introduced the 33 KM Founder’s Challenge (the daily trek of John and Jesse).

Bringing together 140 participants, 7 sponsors, and 835 donors, you helped raise an incredible $101,233 to support the work of Jesse’s Journey!

There’s still time to donate toward this year’s Walk and receive a 2020 tax receipt. Click the button below to donate toward the event, an individual participant, or a team!

Did you miss the opening or closing ceremonies? Weren’t able to join the live-streamed conversations on Facebook? Don’t worry – we have everything recorded and saved on our YouTube channel.

We want to say a special thank you to:

  • The King family, the 2020 Walk ambassadors
  • Kasha Mitton, Co-Creator of The MASH Movement and Duchenne mom, for leading us through the warm-up
  • Laura McCullough, Duchenne mom sharing her story of why she continues to support the Walk after the passing of her son, Cole

And of course, we cannot forget the man who started it all, John Davidson, for his always inspirational words shared throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation online by posting photos and tagging Jesse’s Journey.

“I don’t think anything can prepare you for hearing that your beautiful, innocent little child, through absolutely no fault of his own, has probably the worst disease imaginable – a fatal and slowly progressing disintegration with no cure,” says Sandra King (Mother of Dylan, 11-years old living with Duchenne)

“Through their endless commitment to raising funds to find a cure for Duchenne, Jesse’s Journey is the beacon of light in what otherwise would be a very dark place. This organization, and the people we’ve met through it, have been our most constant reminder we are not alone.”
